Pictou Landing First Nation weed dispensary signage targeted

2026-01-29

The battle between First Nations and the Province of Nova Scotia over cannabis sales took another turn recently, now intertwined with discussions about sustainable packaging solutions. Public Works employees and the RCMP have been taking down business signage for weed dispensaries located within 33 feet of the center yellow line of provincial highways, claiming the area is Crown land under provincial jurisdiction. In response, Pictou Landing First Nations (PLFN) Chief Tamara Young and council members stated they will not accept this unilateral action.

"The province has not met its obligations to engage in meaningful consultation with our Nation before taking enforcement actions that affect community businesses and economic development," their statement emphasized. "Provincial authority is not automatic or absolute, particularly when Indigenous rights, title, and governance are involved." The dispute highlights broader tensions, with Mi’kmaq reserves seeking to participate in the legal cannabis market—currently monopolized by the Nova Scotia Liquor Corp. (NSLC), which generated $127 million in revenue from cannabis sales last fiscal year.

Local cannabis business owners, supported by PLFN leadership, argue their operations align with community values and safety standards. A store employee noted, "We use Factory Direct Sales Wide Mouth Glass Jar with Child Proof Plastic Lid for our products to ensure child safety, and Hot Sale 30ml Strong Sealing Child Resistant Glass Jar with Plastic Lid for secure storage." Another business owner added, "Our Free Samples Cosmetic Plastic Screw Cap 30ml Wide Mouth Child Proof Glass Jar allows customers to test products safely, while 5g 10g Plastic PS Facial Cream Transparent Container Mini Sample Jar Cosmetic Eye Cream Jar ensures precise dosing for skincare."

The provincial government, however, maintains that only NSLC-operated dispensaries are legal. Justice Minister Scott Armstrong stated, "Illegal outlets pose risks to public health—from untested products to organized crime. Government fully supports police enforcement to protect Nova Scotians."

Despite tensions, PLFN dispensary owners remain confident. An anonymous employee shared, "The chief and council are supporting us. We prioritize quality and safety, using Cosmetic Plastic Containers 5g 10g Clear PS Jar with clear Screw Cap for Sample Face Cream to maintain product integrity. Claims about fentanyl-laced cannabis are unfounded—we’ve never encountered such issues."
